Carolina Motorsports Park 9-27-21 - 1:45 Laps - 1995 BMW M3 E36
Two good laps at CMP during a private track day. The first lap is a new personal best at 1:45.27. Chasing a train of faster drivers provided motivation to push harder than I had been.

My first time driving at CMP. It's a fun track with some tricky corners. This lap was a 1:48.44. I laid down a string 1:47s in the last session of the day a fastest time of 1:47.03. I forgot to turn my microphone on for that session though, so there was no sound! So bummed. Engine: S50 3.0L Tires: Hankook Z214, C51 compound, 245/40-17

2nd fastest lap of the day for me. A 1:42.508 while chasing a 650hp Camaro ZL1. The fastest lap was in the first session when I didn't have a camera in the car - a new Laguna Seca PR for me of 1:42.18. The GoPro Hero 6 takes nice video but the sound quality isn't good. I need to get a microphone adapter!

Fastest lap from the weekend during the last session of the day. I had hoped for much better, but the new tires I bought didn't fit under the fenders and I didn't have time to modify things before this event. Had to run worn out Toyo R-888s with 28 heat cycles on them. Someday I'll fix my gauges.

A couple laps following George K in his turbo Miata. George's tires are TOAST but he was out there anyway having fun. It was super entertaining watching him locking up under braking and getting sideways in the corners on those rocks.

This was my fastest lap in the challenge session. Unfortunately I went out with the fuel level too low and the engine starved for fuel every lap at turn 5. You can hear it coughing and laying over from 42 to 45 seconds in the video. At least this is a full 4 seconds faster than my previous visit to Sonoma. Getting better at learning the lines and holding speed through some of the corners.

New personal best lap on Thunderhill west course. I'm blaming the addition of a rear wing and front splitter for the gains because it's not my driving that's improving. And yes, I still haven't fixed my gauges.

Did the transmission also make noise on deceleration?
Yes it does, but in my experience the deceleration noise is directly related to which transmission mounts I use. Stiffer/harder material = more noise - at least in this car.
@@MajorDiscomfort Yes - I have a GS6-53 transmission in my E36 with a lightwheel flywheel & twin disc clutch kit, poly trans & engine mounts. It makes similar noise to yours at idle and you can hear the transmission gear lash when decelerating. There's always some compromise with performance!
What year did you record this
I believe this one was from 2008.
Valeo makes a conversion kit from dual mass to single mass its not lightweight however.
wrong coast-and the tracks SUCK out there OLE School tracks--Lime Rock-Glen-Road Atlanta- Sebring-Daytona
got to witness that challenger in person yesterday and goddamn thats one loud SOB!
So powerful the exhaust has blown the bottom of his trousers off
Hey, so the noise from the fly wheel isn’t a sign of intense wear correct?
Correct. This same transmission was quiet when it had a stock dual mass flywheel and clutch. The rattle noise comes from a small amount of clearance between gear teeth on the input shaft and countershaft inside the gearbox. A piston engine delivers power in small pulses as each cylinder fires, which creates a torsional vibration at the crankshaft. A normal clutch assembly has springs in the disc to help absorb the torsional vibration, or a dual mass flywheel with springs + added weight to smooth out the vibration. When you remove the springs or remove mass, the vibrations from the engine get transmitted more directly to the gearbox and you start hearing the gear teeth rattling against each other. This video clip does a decent job showing what a DMF does. ruclips.net/video/DbvP5EvpUbA/видео.html

@@MajorDiscomfort Very impressive for a S50 US engine, pleasantly surprised!
@@nvl2691 All the credit goes to my machinist. This engine has put down good power since he did his work with the bottom end rebuild and valve job.
So it’s not stock credit to the machinest aayyyy 🤔 lol I hope my s50 can do something close to that with some cams &springs
Damn that thing sounds PISSED OFF !!!!!!!
I just bought a lwfw for my car (not a bmw) and they were recommending a shim kit which I didn’t buy. :) we’ll see how bad it is
An EV will never sound that awesome.
The most amazing sounding race car !!!!
How high does your S50 rev? Reckon it could be daily driven with 264/256 cams?
Redline is 7000 RPM. And yes, the engine could be daily driven with these cams easily. They’re mild and can be used with the stock VANOS. I’d want a taller diff ratio for the street though. In this clip I’m using a 3.64:1 which works well to stay in the power band on track but would be annoyingly low gearing for street use.
@@MajorDiscomfort I have an E36 323ti (Europe exclusive E36 Compact... with an M52B25!) which I was planning on converting to 3.0L using M54B30 internals, and I was thinking of switching to higher lift cams. How lumpy is the 256 exhaust cam? Was hesitating between 264/256 in/ex or 264/244 in/ex. We have rather strict rules concerning modifications here in Europe, so I'd rather not attract any unwanted attention nor loose too much driveability. I currently have a 3.15 LSD in mine but will probably switch to a 3.23 when I end up rebuilding the engine.
@@nvl2691 Ah yes. I have friends in Europe - they have told me how strict the regulations are. With 264/256 cams the idle quality is not too far from stock. If you maintain a stock exhaust system it probably won't attract attention. However to get full benefit from cams you need supporting modifications like intake, header, exhaust, bigger injectors, larger MAF, a retune, etc.. That's probably where you'll run into trouble with regulations.
@@MajorDiscomfort Exhaust is fine, if you buy a street legal silencer they really have no way of knowing if the rest of the exhaust is modified or not, unless it's quite clearly a decatted setup (due to smell). Was planning on going with a full Supersprint setup - equal length manifold, catted H-pipe and regular street legal silencer. Should be fairly tame while still having that lovely equal length exhaust note. Since the engine will be apart, I'll put the head on a flow bench and get it ported. Bigger injectors are planned. Here in Europe all our MAFs are 3.5 inches to start with, so no real need to upgrade. As long as it looks stock from the outside... they have no way of knowing. They're never going to disassemble the engine. I'll also be adding street-legal coilovers, strut bars etc. which should complete it quite nicely.
real sound
I wish they would bring the class back
Without doubt the greatest cars in racing. Next to no regulations - two seats and closed wheel bodywork - pretty well that was the rule book.

It’s always hard to get a sense of the braking watching videos, but it appears like you are keeping good speed through the corners, I hope to get up to that level of smoothness and consistency. Can’t wait to go there this March with PCA in my E30. Thanks for posting this.
I'm braking hard and late here. Actually on the first lap I missed the apex for turn 8 (around :52) because I went a little too deep and had to slow more before turning in. The challenge for me has always been trying to keep pace through cornering speed and braking rather than power. My first track experience was in a gutted E30 at Sonoma Raceway back in 2003. They're super fun! That's the car that got me hooked.
What tires are on your M3?
Toyo Proxes RR, 245/40-17.
The Ferrari Slayer!
that sounds really different to the GT2 on the Nordschleife and in other ALMS videos, must have had a different setup
Very nice! Going to CMP for the first time soon. Your video is very helpful.
It's a fun track with some tricky corners. I've been 4 or 5 times now and I still learn a lot every time I go. You'll have a blast.

How Sweet it IS!!!
SOOOOO Cool to see this machine. Restored by Joe Cavalirie in early 90's I was fortunate to be able to work on this project, I will never forget the Exhaust Headers, all sand bent Titanium tubing that fitted up beyond perfectly 30 years later. Actually it had a lot of titanium upgrades to the vehicle that was all done by Gurneys guys back when Gurney first campaigned the car. Thank you for sharing !!
With your name being Kiwi, you must have felt at home working on that McLaren chassis car.
Gotta love the rear view mirror. Classic.
Matches the rear wing for smooth airflow, lol.
You posted this a long time ago, but thank you. It was so cool to watch.
Go Javelin..... 👍
In 70's I heard my first top fuel. I swear every molecule of my body moved.. unbelievable
that sucks, i dont want a LWF
This clip illustrates an extreme case with a very lightweight race clutch in my gutted track car. But yes, any lightweight flywheel in an E36 results in some increased level of transmission noise. In my daily driver E36 I use a stock (heavy) dual mass flywheel to maintain smoothness and quiet.
@@MajorDiscomfort if we kept the noise factor aside, what about this damaging engine thing that everyone is talking about? will it have a big issue?
@@chamatharavinda3741 If you're talking about crank harmonics, I haven't had any issues with this car over 10+ years of track use. There are also many people who have been running lightweight flywheels in E36s for years with no trouble. For the most part it seems to be how sensitive you are to the increased gearbox noise (which can be substantial and annoying for sure).
@@MajorDiscomfort if it doesn't have any issues like that, actually having a rough sound is also a kool thing...+ performance, I was always wondered why the e36 rev so slowly,
@@MajorDiscomfort it also damages the rod bearings since there is more stress being put on the crankshaft throwing it out of balance since you now are not absorbing any of that chatter, and just allowing it to "run wild"
That sound...!
#6 imho is one of the best looking American race cars ever.
I recently changed out my 05 Mazdaspeed NB Miata (MX5) turbo 6 speed with a Kmiata mod kit (lightened flywheel) and Getrag/BMW ZF 6 speed box, standard BMW clutch, the rattle is not as bad as that but still noisy at times on certain RPM range. I may have to change out to an ACT brand sprung clutch to quiet it down some. For what its worth, its running about the 400rwhp mark.
Love it! Do you have a build thread link you can share? I drove my bone stock E36 M3 at Laguna Seca recently and had a blast.
Thanks! My goal has been to try and maximize the chassis and improve my own driving to go faster rather than adding horsepower. Even stock E36 M3s are super capable on track and fun as hell to drive. Mine has been a work in progress for 10 years now. If I was smart I would have started a build thread back when I first got it. Sadly, I'm not that smart. I've contemplated starting a build thread to recap its full history but I feel like that alone would take a year.
